Flour of Power
I’m a docent at Año Nuevo State Reserve. Today I went for my one-day-a-month-in-the-off-season, where docents don’t lead guided walks, but are available to answer questions and keep the seals safe. Since it was a Saturday morning, and I didn’t have to be at the park until 9:30, I stopped at the Westside Santa Cruz Farmers Market on the way.
And there were peaches in May!
And apricots!
I bought some bread from Companion Bakers, who supply bread to the LEF CSA.
There was also sourdough pizza dough, which I bought, despite having to keep it in the car all day.
They look like huge marshmallows, don’t they? The dough was fine when I got home; I’ve frozen it. When I got to the reserve, I saw a deer while I was walking out to the point.
I saw a molting seal right next to the boardwalk.
And it was cold, cold, cold, cold all day! After freezing for a few hours, I stopped by Pie Ranch
and bought some flour on the way home. They have a beautiful mill imported from Austria.
Pie Ranch grows Sonora wheat! They have an extensive high school program at the farm; Veggielution is going to have to take a field trip this summer while we’re developing our own curriculum.
It was cold because it was windy, but that meant more kite surfers at Waddell than I have ever seen before.
Those specks are all kites. And then home, where my parents took me out to Kaita, where we ate lots of food, and then birthday cake afterward. And tomorrow is Mothers Day!
