Crazy Quilt

It was a spectacular flight from Chicago to San José yesterday. The pilot threaded the plane between towering thunderheads over Nebraska, and again in Nevada. And just at the edge of the last group of thunderheads, we flew over John Muir’s Range of Light in the Sierra, just as the setting sun was lighting the peaks with rosy gold.

In Nebraska, I saw curious colors and patterns in the fields.

I’d seen the huge circles before, of course, but the diagonal stripes were new to me, as well as the exuberant mix of red, gold and green within the same fields. It was very heraldic; I was even reminded of the uniforms the Swiss Guards wear at the Vatican. (Really, I was!)

Over the Central Valley, I couldn’t tell whether the brown fields I saw were fallow because of drought, or brown for another reason. The canal was certainly full of water, going away down south.

I didn’t manage to get anyone to pick up my CSA box for me, which will mean farmers market forays in the greater Santa Cruz area. Not really a problem.

The ALBA event is exerting a powerful attraction, but I don’t know if the other people involved in the Capitola excursion will want to make the extra 1 hour drive each way. We’ll just have to see.
