The County
My iPhone plan does not work in Canada (which saves me from international roaming charges, I guess) and my Mac won’t connect me automatically to teh interwebs with the ethernet cable that’s the way that bits get in and out of this house, so this will be a post with no photos.
Which is a pity, because Prince Edward County is a very beautiful place. My friend Anna and I drove around a small bit of it today, stopping at two dairies that make cheeses, an organic vegetable farm and a cidery (is that a word?) The farm, Vickies Veggies, is run by a friend of a friend of my friend Anna, and she was as friendly as can be, showing us all around her fields, introducing us to her pet Muscovy duck, showing off her experimental row of grains (including, I was tickled to see, Sonoran white wheat.) Her farm is so picture-perfect, to the weathered old barn where she sorted sorrel leaves under drying shallots while talking to us. We bought potatoes, garlic scape pesto and some delicious blueberries. The season here is about a month behind San Jose’s, although we’re too late for cherries.
My eyes never really get used to the intense green of the eastern part of North America, and it’s pretty awe-inspiring that this land goes from a dead deep freeze to exuberant life in such a short period of time, and every year, over and over.
Kingston and The County are on Lake Ontario, and the blue, huge lake is a gorgeous backdrop to a gorgeous countryside. When I get my photos off of my phone, I’ll update this post with some of the things I saw.
Hi Diana,
I grew up across the border from Ontario, in Niagara Falls, N.Y.. On a recent visit during the summer, I realized what a desert San Jose is after watching the rain-fed grass grow for a few weeks.
Happy trails and return home sooon and safe.
