It’s well off the highway, and so very quiet, peaceful and beautiful.

They have a huge deck shaded by a truly enormous oak tree, that dropped hundreds of ballistic acorns while we were there.

<img decoding="async" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3476/3998524006_651e3287b1.jpg", width="400"/>

Heather, and later Stan, made ultimately futile attempts to sweep them up. Sine we were having a Napa Valley experience, we also stopped for lunch and wine.

<img decoding="async" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2609/3997766653_747b393de9.jpg", width="400"/>

That’s Bud and his daughter Laura, who are going about the winemaking in a serious way. Almost all of the grapes we picked went home with them, and they plan to buy a 30 gallon oak barrel and even build a shed to house it. My basement was deemed a wee but too inconvenient. We picked a bit more than 600 lbs of fruit,

<img decoding="async" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2498/3997770687_8053d6b3ae.jpg", width="400"/>

which we determined by weighing it.

<img decoding="async" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2430/3998532500_3fdcc544ea.jpg", width="400"/>

The stemmer-crusher is a fine example of Italian industrial design.

<img decoding="async" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2638/3998533008_5c91cbe90d.jpg", width="400"/>

It’s pretty simple inside. A large auger runs along the bottom of the hopper, and stems get pushed out the side,

<img decoding="async" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3452/3997772167_035b88b301.jpg", width="400"/>

while the crushed grapes pour out the bottom.

<img decoding="async" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2494/3998533972_fbda0a15c3.jpg", width="400"/>

Bud saw no reason to improve on the garbage can method, and we filled five large cans half full with the crush.
