{"id":80,"date":"2008-05-27T12:17:27","date_gmt":"2008-05-27T20:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dianafoss.com\/blog\/2008\/05\/80\/"},"modified":"2009-05-05T15:14:59","modified_gmt":"2009-05-05T23:14:59","slug":"80","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dianafoss.com\/blog\/2008\/05\/80\/","title":{"rendered":"Reduce, reuse, recycle II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Assemblymember Paul Krekorian, D-Burbank, is currently carrying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.signonsandiego.com\/uniontrib\/20080527\/news_1n27water.html\">AB 2153<\/a>, which would require new development to mitigate new water use.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nKrekorian&#8217;s measure would require developers to prove their projects have no net gain in water use or pay into a fund to finance conservation projects elsewhere, such as fixing leaky pipes, cleaning up groundwater and recycling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The measure contains some exemptions: Projects that replace existing building would be exempt if they use less water. Affordable housing would not be subject to the law.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the bill requires that at least 40 percent builder-financed conservation would have to be achieved in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Needless to say, builders and developers are against it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Accounting for every drop of water goes too far,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Assemblyman Doug La Malfa, R-Willows, who worries that making developers responsible for even more conservation will \u00e2\u20ac\u0153be used as an excuse\u00e2\u20ac\u009d to abandon planning for new reservoirs for the entire state.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Los Angeles has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lacity.org\/mayor\/myrpress\/mayormyrpress27453107_05152008.pdf\">already announced<\/a> that it plans to accommodate future population growth with aggressive conservation and recycling programs.<\/p>\n<p>We must do the same.<\/p>\n<p>ETA: In case you missed it, <a href=\"http:\/\/dianafoss.com\/Misc%20Files\/WaterInAnEndlessLoop.mp4\">here<\/a> is an excellent half-hour video on water recycling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-summary\">\nAssemblymember Paul Krekorian, D-Burbank, is currently carrying AB 2153, which would require new development to mitigate new water use.
