Wheat Berry Pancakes

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

I’ll admit that I bought the little bag of wheat berries last week mostly because I can’t resist unusual foods at a farmers market. When I thought about how to use them, I had hazy intentions of making something savory, like a pilaf. Then in the Craft: blog I saw a recipe this week for [...]

Blogrolling in our time

Friday, June 12th, 2009

In Mark Bittman’s blog, Paula Crossfield, of civileats.com, has put together a nice list of sustainable food blogs. And Food, Inc. opens today, to positive reviews. I didn’t realize quite how lucky I was to have been able to see it early.

CSA Box

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

We return to Thursday’s exhaustive chronicling of the contents of the Live Earth Farm CSA box. Now with a tablecloth background! I made strawberry jam on Monday, and promptly gave it all away. I’ll make more with these, although it will mean buying more jars. It really struck me today just how good LEF strawberries [...]

Guadalupe River Trail

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

This morning’s Merc has a nice travelogue by Lisa Krieger about a ride along the Guadalupe River Trail. I’ve always stopped at the airport, where the trail turns to gravel. I’ll have to push on one day when I have a couple hours to spend.

More week’s links

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

The Chronicle has stopped publishing a real food section on Wednesday (at least online; I haven’t seen the paper Chron for quite a while.) They spread their food articles out over the week, and a couple days ago, there was a very nice article on food preservation through fermentation. Not only are there recipes, but [...]

Waiting for stone fruit

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Only one orange tree today, and only 40 lbs of fruit for me to take to Martha’s Kitchen. They were good, sweet oranges, and the yard, new to us, had nice apple and pear trees. Lots of smelly dog poop, though. While we were at that house, a young man stopped to talk to us. [...]

And your point about recycled water is what, exactly?

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Sometimes the dual food and water focus of this blog produces some unsavory juxtapositions, but this graphic is too good to pass up. The original poster’s point is, of course, that the Delta is in serious trouble. I won’t dispute that. But when people express squeamishness about recycled water, remember that this is where half [...]

The Cool Kids

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Yesterday afternoon, I attended a benefit, called “Dirt to Dining,” for the Ecological Farming Association, who brings you Eco-Farm every January at Asilomar. While I wouldn’t necessarily suggest that you attend Eco-Farm alone without knowing anyone there and share a room with a young woman who decides to invite in a stranger after you go [...]

Campbell Farmers Market

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

I’m off to a fundraiser this afternoon for the Ecological Farming Association, and I have to leave too early to be able to work at Veggielution. :-( But the extra time this morning did mean that I got to ride my bike and visit the Campbell farmers market, which is my favorite market after Mountain [...]
