Figs
We picked some figs today at Village Harvest, along with an astonishing amount of grapefruit. My fig tree is a sad tree, certainly due to my decision 12 years ago to build a treehouse around it. Not in it; the treehouse platform is supported by sturdy wooden posts on concrete footings. But the luxuriant fig trees we picked today reminded me of how my tree used to be, and I was sad.
I was also going to post about changes in the Santa Clara County response to the Light Brown Apple Moth, but all I have is a multiply-forwarded email, when I’d rather link to something more official. The important part says that food banks distributing within a regulated county (like Santa Clara) can accept household donation of fruits and vegetables (although not cut flowers nor decorative greens) as long as the food banks themselves are under a compliance agreement with SC County Ag. This last requirement is also evidently under review.
That’s great news! Gardeners with bumper crops of zucchini and tomatoes can now legally bring them in to feed the hungry. When I get a link to something official, I’ll post it here.
